The Ukraine war is dragging on. The far east of Ukraine was pro Russian and they are now occupying it, so in negotiations would you give it up for the chance to end the war?.

No, because it won't end there. Appeasement never works.

Russia wouldn't be satisfied with that.

Give them an inch.............................

"The far east of Ukraine was pro Russian"

It wasn't: in 1991 those regions voted overwhelmingly to be part of Ukraine and most Russians who lived there and did "look to Russia" (whatever that means) long ago learned to hate Putin.

"so in negotiations would you give it up for the chance to end the war"

It's not that type of war: not a "territorial dispute" but a destructive war of genocide against the whole country.
So Tora and Naomi are correct

If there was a true & fair referendum overseen by maybe the UN, & if the people of that region voted to be part of Russia, then yes.

No ...They would want more.

Thank you ichkeria. An interesting post about east Ukraine.

That's ok William: it's one of the great myths about Ukraine (encouraged by the Kremlin) that there was some sort of separatist movement that started a rebellion. Undoubtedly many people felt less Ukrainian both in the east and the south (even Crimea tho voted 57-43 to be in Ukraine) but they didn't want to be part of Russia

William, I'm going to ask the editor to move your thread to Politics.  It won't be done until at least tomorrow so please continue here in the meantime.  It's an excellent question.

I think if Ukraine, in part or as a whole, fell or ceded territory, Russia wouldn't stop there.

No.

Allow invasion and the aggressor will know you'll cave next time, and the next time, and the next time, ...

Obviously resistance relies on resources but until that runs out...

If eastern Ukrainians prefer to be Russian, they know where the border is. They can return there.

Eisenhower apparently

Peace will only happen if all parties want it. The same in Gaza. If they don't, then they'll carry destroying everything.
