Is there any way people could attach photos to their questions so that if there is something they particularly want to find but they can't describe it/don't know what it is called, they can put a photograph up?

This has no doubt been asked previously, but I can't find anything when I look.

This would result in people attaching portraits of themselves, possibly in a state of deshabille. Can't say I fancy the idea myself. A word is worth a thousand pictures.

No you don't need your own website. All you need is a site like ImageShack. Upload your picture to the site (click "Browse..." then "host it!"), then the page after gives you a direct link to your picture. #
