Identifying a moth

I have just found a very large moth in the garden and I would like to search on this site to identify it

but I'd like to narrow it down a bit first. The moth doesn't look well and appears to have been damaged somehow as the wings are slightly tatty and have few scales and consequently no colour.

I measured the wings and they are each 6 cm from the point of attachment to the thorax to the tip. The body from the front of the head to the tip of the abdomen is 5 cm.

Can anybody offer the names af a few likely candidates?

Hi SteveD, Not much to go on but the Hawk moths are some of the largest. Take a look at the Poplar Hawkmoth, the wing shape is very distinctive and you may at least be able to eliminate this one from your search.
