Civil Wedding Readings
8 Answers
Can someone recommend some prose for a reading at a civil wedding? Something modern and not too sentimental would be ideal!

I read the following at a friends wedding recently:
Apache Blessing
Now you will feel no rain,
For each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
For each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there is no more loneliness for you,
For each of you will be companion to the other.
Now you are two bodies,
But there is only one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place,
To enter into the days of your togetherness.
And may your days be good and long upon the earth.

'Us Two' by AA Milne a taster of which is;
lets frighten the dragons I said to Pooh
That's right said Pooh to me
I'm not afraid I said to Pooh
And I held his paw and I shouted Shoo!
Silly old dragons and off they flew
I wasn't afraid said Pooh said he
I'm never afraid with you
Sorry I didn't bother with the punctuation but you'll get the gist, I always think you can't go wrong with Pooh ( I listened to Alan Bates reading Pooh on the way to my own wedding, great for pre wedding nerves!)
The Prophet by Kalil Gilbran usually yields something appropriate and I can think of another poem whose title escapes me but I will post here when I find it.
We had this extract from 'will you give me yourself' by Walt Whitman.
Afoot and lighthearted, take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before you.
Say only to one another:
Camerado, I give you my hand!
I give you my love, more precious than money,
I give you myself before preaching and law:
Will you give me yourself?
Will you come travel with me?
Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?
Aahhh. By the way, I don't think you can have readings from the Prophet, as it is religious
