Go to the door with your mouth foaming, and a chicken in one hand with a cleaver in the other covered in blood and as you open the door mutter something about beelzebub (sp?).
That should do the trick - and if you can video it and send it off to You've been framed - can get some money aswell!
Have you complained to the police about these people? I mean you don't KNOW that they are real evangelists do you? they might as you say be casing the joint for burglars. I have had some sucess with a sign that says "we do not buy from door to door salesmen and that includes religion. Ignoring this sign will be interpreted as harassment"
When we lived in surrey, we had the same problem as you..its a real pain
my family are full on j.ws, its got to the point i have nothing to do with them as they are too obsessive, same goes 4 other religions. not everyone gets like that, but they mostly are. on xmas day they dont see it as rude, but strong on their own part for going out on gods service on this false pagan day. just tell them you are an 'apostate'-- this is the brand they give those who left the jehovahs witnesses and 'trash' the belief. well, i dont trash, but just coz i think its a cult, im branded on of those and i love it! does this help? |
Have you tried complete silence? Stare at them and keep completely silent. They have an answer for every objection you raise and they have a number of opening gambits but after a while they will have used them all up. Eventually they'll run out of things to say. Then you can close the door. (Obviously only open the door with the chain on or better still, if you can, see who it is from the upstairs window; more physical distance between you and them means less engagement).
When I was 7 my uncle died tragically 2 weeks after Xmas, and my granddad died a further 2 weeks after that. The weekend of my granddad's death some JW's turned up on our doorstep, my mum was obviously distressed and asked them that if there was a God, why did he put her father though an illness he suffered for five long years and to take away her brother so tragically? We got the "God works in mysterious ways" crap and my mum asked them to leave as she was too upset and closed the door. They then knocked again and my mum started getting angry and told them to leave immediately, this went on for a while and eventually they got the hint but pushed some leaflets through our front door. This made my mum see red and she marched over to the neighbour's house where the JW's now stood screwed it up threw it in one's face and pushed the other to the ground. My dad got my mum back in the house, and everything calmed down. This and other occassions when I have been preached to by JW's have led me to despise them.
I have no prejudice against any religion as long as it is it not forced upon me, I think something should seriously be done about JW's and encroaching on other people's homes and lives, as it is a form of harrassment. I'm not ignorant and am completely am to choose any religion on my own. But I would love to have a list of addresses of JW's in the area and just spend the evening dinging their doorbell and talking about dog $hit or something equally as enthralling and see how they enjoy it.
Perhaps you ought to contact your local authority mullein, keep a diary and detailed record of when they visit and what they say and you could perhaps get an injunction? It isn't fair on you or your family and something needs t be done. I don't think by dealing with them directly will help, i.e. by sending them a letter. Tell them you have contacted the police as they are harrassing you and if they don't leave immediatly then you will call them there and then and get them arrested for harrassment or some such.
Also, as Octavius mentioned, I don't like the fac that they drag young children around with them for two reason:
1. Children should not be carted round in the freezing cold and pouring rain in an attempt to get more followers, it will only make them ill.
2. Also on a personal note I believe that children should be brought up to believe in anything they choose, and not have anything forced upon them. They're only children once, and ought to be playing instead of trekking round streets to have doors slammd in their face when it's not their fault.
Smudge we really are on the phone in my area when the JW's come to the door - we're all on the WoW line (witnesses on warpath) warning each other!
It should be stopped - I recently watched them knock & knock at an old disabled lady's door for 12 minutes. Fortunately she didn't answer, probably been warned too.
Well, I had a lot of time and when they called i talked to them on the doorstep. They cannot substantiate their faith (thats why its a faith) so just by asking them to, e.g. - who is this god you keep talking about, who made him etc etc etc they eventually realise they are not getting anywhere and leave, making a note to cross off your house from future calls.
They've not been back since. You need some time, but if you have it then you can enjoy a pleasant chat and watch them getting tied up in their own nonsense.
They'll try to justify it by saying, its written here, I ask by whom and back we go to god and etc etc etc
Many years ago when I lived in a town my husband was out the front of our house repairing the car. I noticed he was talking to a young woman. Some time later I looked out and saw that he was under the car and the young woman was sitting on the grass beside him looking under the car as well! It looked very strange as she was dressed in a mac, headscarf and court shoes.
Our front garden was about 100ft long so I didn't bother to go out and find out what was going on but just watched from the window. Eventually she got to her feet and went. My husband came in with an exasperated look on his face. She was a Jehovas witness and had been preaching to him whilst he was under the car. He had tried to carry on and ignore her but she would not take the hint.
On a different note, we now live out in the wilds and I have only been visited twice in 25 years. This year an elderly couple knocked on my door and explained they were JW's. They were a delightful pair and when I explained I really wasn't interested, did not pursue the matter at all. We found out that we originated from the same part of London and spent a good half an hour in the garden talking about all sorts of things. So they are not all bad.
