Wii Remote Constantly Needs Re-Syncing

When I turn the wii on there are no lights on the remote even though the batteries are fresh. I can get it going by pressing the red sync button near the battery compartment followed by the sync button on the console, but it goes dead again when you change menus and I have to go through the process again. Any ideas?
