Does anyone know the rules of life insurance? Can you sign up to this if you have something wrong with you? Who'd the best company to go with? This is information for a family member x

You have to disclose what is wrong with you to the insurance company. They can then make a decision to cover you or not.
It's Assurance. Yes they will ask a lot of questions and here will probably be a medical. Any non disclosure will mean no payout or reduced payout. If you have a known condition and declare it they will either exclude that condition or not cover at all.

Yep, what everyone has posted so far is correct. You have to declare if you have any known conditions, you also have to declare if any of your close relatives died from or suffer from certain conditions, and the companies often seek a report from your GP before they decide a) if they can take you on and b) what premium they will charge you. There are hundreds of life assurance companies and a great many different types of policies - whole of life, term assurance, etc - it's worth shopping around and taking impartial advice if necessary.
