we've had this computer a few years and it was running windows 98. It started crashing all the time and then wouldnt work so a friend of mine wiped it and put windows me on 4 us. We phoned cable internet and they talked us through putting cable internet back on but they said our drivers 4 our modem had gone and that we need 2 find out what modem we have (manufacturer and model) but we cant find this out...does anybody know a way of finding this out??
Do you mean your modem is internal? If so, you can download this program which will tell you exactly what you have installed in your comp http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
The modem is internal...how do i download that program which will tell me wot i have installed on my computer if we cant get on the internet with that computer??
You need a program called Sisoft Sandra, once installed this will tell you all the info about you're PC's hardware.
Once you know what make it is you may well find that Windows M.E has the drivers for it.
I am running XP so it maybe slightly different but this will give you an idea.....click on "START"..."Control Panel"...then "Phone and Modem Options" and if you click on the "modems" tab it should give you then details....you may also find if you click about there an option try and load drivers from another source which if you still have your Win 98 disc you can do.
You will ultimately need an internet connection to get (download) your modem drivers unless you can find the modem driver CD which should have been supplied with your PC. Perhaps the friend of yours could undo some of the damage he has done with his half-arsed job and search the net for you. I would take the lid off the computer and read the info on the modem card: it may well give the manufacturer/model number to help you track it down. I have also searched the web using the FCC ID number stamped on the modem to get drivers. BTW, www.driverguide.com is a very good web site to locate drivers.
You seem to be pointing out my obvious mistake quite a lot Inkie My apologies for trying to help but, why not use the computer you are on at this moment to download it and save the setup program to a floppy disk (593kb) then take it to your other computer??
