Chickens belong to the family Phasianidae. They are Gallus domesticus. Common body variations within the species are not usually given further scientific identification. The variety known as the Bantam has no scientific name.  Some of the varities of Bantams are Silkie Bantam, Cochin Bantam, and Dutch Bantam...
The name appears first in about 1749 and is, apparently, named after Bantam, former Dutch residency in Java, from which the small domestic fowl were said to have been first imported.
