Has Ricky Gervaise got it in for Peter Kay?
10 Answers
Watching the Extras Xmas Special, I spotted a number of things which could be construed as digs at Peter Kay:
- the almost identical character in Dr.Who
- mockery at appearing on the Catherine Tate Show
- ridiculing a charity single for Africa with z-list celebs in the video (like Amarillo was)
- the sitcom with catchphrases cut off before its time (though I realise this could be The Office as much as Phoenix Nights or Max & Paddy)
- references to Andy being overweight
Am I reading too much into this - I'm well aware other media figures were ridiculed too - or might Ricky G have it in for Peter K?

Peter Kay is a great comedy actor and a natural born stand-up comedian. But sitcom writing is not really his strong point. Phoenix Nights and especially Max & Paddy don't really bear repeat watching in the way that The Office of Extras do. Anyway...
It seemed to me like Gervais was having a pop at just about every British comedian actually! Appearing on comedy panel shows, releasing a single, making too many series, relying on catchphrases, popping up on frothy BBC1 dramas, making a show of doing work for charity.
If he was having a go at anyone it was David Walliams!
Besides, I'm pretty sure Ricky Gervais once had a boxing match with Grant Bovey for charity and recorded Free Love On The Free Love Freeway as a single (and rewrote The Office to make the Xmas special accessible to a BBC1 audience) so he's not sparing himself either!

As others have said, I think he had a go at everyone(including himself) regarding the false image of 'celebrity'.
Have to say he does have a point about the Dr Who alien thing and especially Big Brother! Pure genius.
And let's face it, he is probably the only man on the planet who could get away with his Comic Relief skit/sketch......
