Removal Of Drink-Drivers 'Good News For Law-Abiding Motorists'

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Law-abiding motor insurance customers should welcome the fact that 9,000 drink-drivers have been removed from UK roads recently, it has been suggested.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) claimed the figure demonstrated targeted enforcement campaigns work, adding it is encouraging to see initiatives such as this helping to improve safety for considerate road users.

However, although there has been an overall drop in drink-driving, the organisation stated there was still more work to be done to stop the irresponsible minority who persist in breaking the law.

IAM's director of research and policy said "We need more targeted enforcement all year round."

The research has shown that young men are more likely to drink and drive than older motorists. These drivers also have a high risk of crashing and there is a perception among their peers that they can 'get away with it'. Young people must be convinced that the only way to drive is sober.

Although there are now fewer irresponsible drivers on the road than there were in previous years, there are still too many people who are prepared to risk their own and others' lives by driving after drinking or taking drugs.
