UK Set For A ‘Plague’ Of Speed Cameras

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has slated the government for the "plague of speed cameras" spreading across the country alongside unnecessarily low speed limits.

IAM training is unanimously recommended by the motor insurance industry as one of the best ways to lower motor insurance quotes. It is offered to car drivers to improve their driving standards, helping to make them safer on the roads.

"The key to driving safely is to look at the road ahead and to adjust your speed according to what you see," a spokesman for IAM commented.

"When the speed limit is set way below what is a reasonable and safe maximum for the road, drivers cannot do this without breaking the limit."

"When such limits are rigidly enforced, drivers can no longer pay attention to upcoming hazards and lose the ability to recognise and respond to them correctly," he added.

Although many people can see the value in speed cameras, the firm belief remains that safety cameras are primarily for raising revenue. Until that link is broken it will remain very difficult to convince all drivers that safety cameras really do deliver fewer deaths and serious injuries.
