Does anyone understand what's going on in China as regards the govt's obsession with zero Covid and it's constant lockdowns etc? These are inevitably leading to civil unrest.

No, I don't understand what's going on but do admire the fact that the Chinese are rebelling. It's extremely brave of them to do so.
Maybe the originators of the disease have yet to reveal the endgame they're so obviously afraid of to the rest of the world.

Many have been killed and many taken by the authorities. Awful as it may be, it could potentially bring down the corrupt communist government.
No Tigger, they just send the tanks in.
Poor poor people..
It is a question of looking strong & honourable. The party can not afford to admit their zero covid strategy was an insane decision and causing a worse situation than it need be, so it is continually in force. The population are so controlled such protest was not anticipated. After all their tactics took care of Tiananmen Square in the past. But the people have been pushed too far again.

Good luck to the Chinese public. Ideally they need the Communist Party to stand down. Alternatively they may get one tyrant replaced by another. A change is supposed to be as good as a rest, no ?
^^^Tiananmem Square style.
I don't think the Chinese have a very effective covid vaccine, and have not prioritised elderly for protection so covid running rife could be catastrophic for them.
It says in that article...and I've read it elsewhere...that case numbers are at a record high. Yet vaccine uptake is very low. Instead of imprisoning people in their homes, why the heck doesn't the government encourage people getting vaccinated? Do this, regain freedom of movement, lessen the virus impact if you do get sick.
One must just see the Governing Party, albeit defined as Communist, as yet another Chinese dynasty. It's all about the control exerted from on above in Beijing and driven through the provincial capitals/governors.

What they, the governing diktorat, really fear is a revolution/protests from the agrarian folk - after all, unlike Russia, it was from the agrarian sector that the Communists came to power.

Who does?
The Chinese government is a totalitarian regime, and because of historical Chinese cultural attitudes, it has had no problem in maintaining its power - the people simple accept the omnipotence of the state as the way things are.

Or rather they did - the protests have included calls for Xi Jinping - currently ruler for life under recent amendments to government rules - to resign, something absolutely unprecedented, and seriously dangerous.

The government will crush the rebels with force, but it may be that the genie is actually out of the bottle, we will have to see.

Clearly we do - the fact that we can go out tomorrow is proof of that.
I doubt if Confucious will allow the collapse....no, change will occur from within....turbulent maybe but outside our rest of the world control.
The vaccines in China are perfectly good.
It's just control freakery by an authoritarian regime.
When the outbrreak first started it was comparatively easy for the authorities to control it - a combination of draconian measures and the simple fact that it would have been like closing your hand over the hub of a wheel. All Covid stemmed from there and they also didn't have the issue of people coming from abroad with it.
But the inevitable happened: eventually people DID started bringing it in, and just because you have a vaccine doesn't mean people won't still get ill - just hopefully less seriously.
I am sure they have their own vaccines now or can import them...back when it all kicked off, maybe not. The current zero tolerance is leading to soem major economical and societal imbalances and, as such, is unsettling, even if it does deflect from local Far East issues such as Taiwan, the China sea or any aspirations to the Northwest or Inner Mongolia/Mongolia.
Clearly we do

to be fair, roy is in Oz or the land of Mozart and 'covid liberty' may be very different in the former as I don't think he has much connection to a city such as Salzburg, other than if it were renamed as 'Sneezbugie.'
roy - Clearly we do
