I'd like to set this up . Instructions are at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/how-to-use-two-step-verification-with-your-microsoft-account-c7910146-672f-01e9-50a0-93b4585e7eb4 but it includes

Note: As part of setting up this account, you’ll be given a QR code to scan with your device; this is one way we ensure you are in physical possession of the device you are installing the Authenticator app to.

But do you actually need to instal the authenticator app -can't you just get a text to your phone?

I don't want to say yes then be unable to scan the QR code (as my phone is not very good at that ) and find myself locked out of my account  . Thanks

It works by the authenticator app not SMS(old hat now).

So yes you will need it.  I have three authenticator apps Google, MS and authy.

It works well when setup.

Thanks -while I'd like to set it up, I don't really know what I'm doing so I'll have a hunt for some youtube videos .

yes -  no - the same point has made me stop and think.

[usual thing - a great techical advance, fool proof which a large section of the population ( perhaps the most vulnerable) cannot  access]

[I am dooing a uni course ( extrenal) and can access none of the learning materials on 'their blackboard' - so what? they dont care, they  have my fee]

Question Author

I've found some youtube videos

But none of them refer to this QR code so I suspect the requirement to use a QR code is a recent development.

If anyone can find some instructions or video that is meant for the techie challenged, please share .
