Do most Americans really think that all British people live in London and speak with a cut-glass accent?

no they think we all talk cockney, the roads are pebbled, the air is foggy, we have horses still, wear bowler hats.

Our Jimmy decided he wanted to go to America to seek his fortune, so he tells all his family his plan and they organise a 'Our Jimmy's going to America ' party. They're all in the pub giving him a great send off and Jimmy says his goodbyes. About 11pm jimmy says he's away on his big adventure. His Uncle Mick says, 'You can't go now Jimmy, we just got a round in. Jimmy says 'No, I'm off, i'm going to America now.' Auntie Mary sitting in the corner with her Guiness and Whiskey chaser pipes up, 'How you gonna get there our Jimmy, all the buses have stopped?'

Jimmy says he has a plan, 'Our Danny's got a boat ready at the docks and I am gonna row to America'.

So they all carry on for a bit then they all accompany Jimmy down to the docks and say their goodbyes, then they all go back to the Pub to finish the farwell party.

Danny, Jimmy's mate, sets off to leave the do and says his goodbyes to Auntie Mary and Uncle Mick, 'God bless you both, hope all goes well for our Jimmy.' Danny turns back, 'By the way, did anyone untie the moaring rope on that boat?'

Auntie Mary and Uncle Mick go rushing down to the dock and start shouting into the dark. They hear the splash and slap of frantic oars, 'Jimmy, Jimmy can you hear us Jimmy?'

Jimmy stops rowing and looks up, ' gawd blimey, nobody knows me in America!'

They watch coronation st and think we are all like them! dodgy goings on etc-lol
We do still have horses, don't we? I'm sure I saw a couple in a field the other day........And don't they think we all talk like Dick Van Dyke?

No more than all Brits think most Americans live in New York or Chicago and all last names are Irish or Italian...

Next, I suppose your going to tell me "Monarch of the Glen" isn't actually life in Scotland... hmmmppff!

Whilst travelling a few years ago i relished in correcting almost every single Yank we met that despite being from Britain that no, we dont live in London - we live in a little village called Manchester.
One rather misguided soul had just seen Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves and was easily convinced that we all live in castles.
And all Americans live in skyscrapers, don't they?
I was once asked "What's the capital of London?"
Of course not. You all talk like the Beatles. Or the Spice Girls. Right...?
My American cousins asked me years ago if we had T.V,Nintendo, pool and Coca Cola...and did I know the Queen! They were certainly under the impression that we all lived in thatched cottages in tiny little villages!
I don't think it's limited to americans, lots of countries have a romantic view of the UK. Many of my relatives abroad think that England is in London.

During the second world war American when they came to Britain were told the natives are friendly.

because americans can be quite ignorant
