No the answer is definitely MATTER, because I do the crossword online, a number of possible solutions to this seemed more possible including ranter etc....
The letters I had were ?A?T?R
K - yep this seems to be one really bad clue and answer. If anybody else has any better ideas about this - other than BigDave it would be appreciated :-)
I guess we could complain to the crossword editor at the DT, but I believe she was fired recently.
"Revenge is supposedly best served cold, but for Kate Fassett, freshly sacked crossword editor of 'The Daily Telegraph', her last clues were too good a chance to miss.
Three down in Friday's puzzle reads, "Get rid of The Tel. Editor? Some would appear upset!"
If someone asked a person what was wrong, that person may reply very angrily, along the lines of " That's what's the matter", pointing at an expensive crystal vase smashed to bits on the floor. Sorry it's a bit of a long-winded explanation, but this definition of what is wrong is frequently used in the North West of England.
I thought along the same lines as Lie-in King. Double meaning - i.e. "what's the MATTER" and someone who snarls is a MATTER (someone who matts things up, snarls). A bit of a dubious clue, but that must be the answer.
Because the site won't accept the answer until you get it right !!
I didn't think the wordplay was much trouble once you knew the answer, it was getting there in the first place.! I had several goes, and only tried matter because I got mat as a synonym for snarl, and was surprised when it was accepted.
