Stuck on last two but because of nature of puzzle I can give only the number of letters, no other clues

14ac - 'Ring' opening clamped - singing well (7 letters)

8dn - Two thirds of a spotty singer's career (4 letters)

One of you may be able to crack them with a fresh mind. Thanks in advance

8 Could be "well" as in two thirds of Simon Co(well), the guy who "spots" singers!
a bit tenuous though
Well being rush and career
8d) A spotted bird....Th RUSH
14a) Could be VOICING... V(o)icing

Thank you Barry, RUSH fits in because the word I have to enter should be a second meaning for RUSH and it is REED.
Hope you will be able to crack the other one too. My mind could not get away from a human singer and was thoroughly stuck !!

Again you have cracked it for me Barry, because the word that I had to fit in is ACCOUNT and it is another meaning for in-voice which ie O in vice (clamped)

That has cleared almost a week of racking my brains !!!!

Many many thanks
ramilahs, why didn't you give that extra information earlier?
That would help people like myself on here not to waste their time!
We are not all Guardian connoisseurs!!
The answers were fairly obvious with that extra information!

Sorry Merlinius,

It was a question of how not to go into lengthy explanations and of course I did not know how many Guardian crossworders were out there.

But the simple answer is that I did not have the words REED and ACCOUNT with me -- these were worked out after I had Barry's reply. I only had ?E?D and A?C?U?T and I could not be sure if these were right.

I hope that explains it all.

Sorry again !!
ramilahs, your apology is humbly accepted :-(
