I came across an interesting book* in the library this morning and skip-reading it in the bus on the way home I came across a statement which applied in the Sixties, and I wondered if it still applies (I know I could Google it, but it's more fun tabling it here). The rule was that an MP who become a declared bankrupt must resign their seat.

*A very English Crime, by John Preston (Penguin) ISBN 978-0-241-21572-2. It covers the Jeremy Thorpe Murder Case, which I remember well.

still the case as far as I know.
I am sure that the same rule covered some jobs in the civil service. Someone at our location went bankrupt and was moved from a job in our finance office to prevent temptation.
