ZoneAlarm runs very well with AVG

AdAware is excellent anti-spyware

You could also use A2 (the third one in this list)

All are free, all compatible with each other.

Thanks for that , if i install AdAware do i uninstall windows defender and keep windows firewall , should that be sufficient ?
unlike anti virus software which you shouldn't really have more than one installed you can install more than one anti spyware package.

Adaware doesn't run in the background, you actually have to run it manually and start the scan yourself so it will co exist with defender OK

and I would install zone alarm rather than rely on the windows firewall, the windows one isn't very good.. It's only one way for a start, it will stop incoming connections but does nothing about outgoing connections at all!
I would use ZoneAlarm instead of Windows firewall.

Activating ZoneAlarm will automatically disable the Windows Firewall.

Adaware runs independently and doesn't cause compatibility issues, so you could use that AND defender

once again thanks for yr advice
Malwarebytes anti-malware is an excellent protective programme I have found. It runs in the background and removes any malware one byte at a time.
