To keep you dry. No chance of escape as you'd have been swaddled as a baby and clipped in by your rein harness when you were older.
Now that makes sense...The keeping dry.
Fresh air was a 'thing' for babies at that time. All year round the babies in my family were left in the pram in the garden for hours, with a hot water bottle in the winter. God knows how I learned to walk and talk
Yes.....you were clipped by two D rings on the sides of your reins....the cover that kept you dry had a bib bit that hooked part way up the hood and you could chew on that when you were teething..

Metal basket underneath for the shopping and later came hooks for the handle to hang more shopping bags......and of course in summer the big canopy with a frill around it....x
Yes! Now I remember the "wind shield" thingy.
Gness, do you remember a space under the mattress for a potty?
I do, Hc....the base was in panels and the centre one lifted out so you could put the potty in....or more shopping I suppose!
I see so many large kids in pushchairs who should be able to walk a decent way, and they often have dummies stuck in their mouths. I suppose it's easier than cajoling a curious child to keep walking when you need to get somewhere, but I don't think it's good for them.
