Did The People Who Took Us In, Find Out What It Would Cost To Get Out/
12 Answers
I`ve not seen anything on A/B about the cost of leaving the European Union, so I hope I`m not repeating what has been said in the past. I don`t understand much about the so-called "Brexit Thing" but it seems to me obvious that whoever took us into membership of the Euro club, should have considered at the time, how much does it cost to get out!
After all, if I`m changing my car insurance, changing energy suppliers or something important like that, it seems logical to ask them wot knows, how much do I have to pay to leave the contract early!
I am in favour of leaving (at almost any cost) just to return to ounces and pounds, and having one unit of measurement etc. and not having to do mental gymnastics to work out whether it`s hot or cold. AND being an old miserable git anyway, I`ve had forty-odd years to learn all the foreign stuff, I`m STILL not used to it!

and the dose for kiddies ( get it wrong and you KILL them !) weeeeee! is 0.1 mg / stone !
yup sho' ting !

Pethidine was 10 mg/ stone
pethidine and atropine was commonly used as a premed in 1890 ......

can you explain for AB peeps
well turn over an arith exercise book from the fifties,
and it is covered with conversions
inches to feet to rods perches and god knows what
pounds to stone and cwt
square inches to square feet to square yards
oi oi oi !- - - - and to remember them
and and there were three ( yup, that's fwee!) to remember for weights and measures depending ....
depending on what? I hear you ask
depending on what you are weighing
the first one was pounds stone and tons - avoirdupois - er you DO have dupois? - that was for commerce and also what people weighed...
and the second one was for weighing gold - Troyes ( silent s) named after the place ( there is a place called Troyes, you know where the treaty came from)
and the third was for weighing drugs ( which mostly didnt work in those days) drachms and grains
and a grain figured in all THREE but they were er different weights
so if you were treating a kid ( =small human, often found in schools and houses, noisy, unwashed) with medicine - ( that was perhaps after you had tried kissing the child better - mwah mwah all gone!)
then you gave less to a smaller kid ( to avoid killing them)
you gave less in pharmacy grains according to how much the little mite weighed in avoirdupois. ( stone - a stone was a unit of weight in the Good Old Days )
Medicine went metric in around 1965 thank god
yes it really was like that

The Common Market was sold as a free trade area. Good.
We would agree on common standards for goods (PP's entertainingl post about groats and ells). That good too. Common railway gauge?
But...
We would have to withdraw special trading provisions for our traditional Commonwealth suppliers and impose high tariffs in goods imported from those and any other areas outside the Common Market. . Not so good for us. Nor for those nations whose main export market - a third of all exploits in the case of NZ - whose exports went to the UK market.
And the secret agenda for political and monetary union would emerge later.
Of course, Heath and the others knew this all along.
The British were warned: by Enoch Powell and Tony Benn.
