I Am Trying To Copy Files To A Usb Stick. They Get So Far Then It Stios Saying The File Is Corrupted. So I Started Again And All Well For A Bit.

Then it hung up again. The PC then says device not recognised or similar and the drive has dissapeared. Rebooting did not help. 
I returned the dive for a refund and bought another from elsewhere and tonight I had happened again!

Same thing.

All the files can be opened on two different drives ok.

More importantly can anyone advise on how I can get the drive recognised again please?

Do a scan on the usb stick.

Don't know if this is any help, but when i've had this, I take the usb out of one of the front slots (PC) and stick it in a rear slot (or vice versa). Not very scientific I know, but it usually works.

 I have tried different sockets both on a hub and the pc itself and I have rebooted with it plugged in.

The files are only our family archive photos. Monochrome prints I scanned plus 4000 slides that I copied via my camera. 
saved to 2 hds.All images open ok on both drives.

 

I got two engraved usbs for the kids to keep. The first copied over fine but the second didn't and eventually was not recognised. This replacement from a different source has done the same.

How big in MB or GB?

12 gb all together. But not in the same folder.

40 scans in one

60 in another

4500 slides in yearly folders 1968-1992

errors like corrupted file messages appear at any time and in any folder

I`d reformat the stick and then renew the usb drivers.

Check the entire size of all the files you are hoping to transfer in case you are pushing the limits and check the stick size on a different machine. There are quite a few dodgy ones around claiming to be bigger than they are.

Have you tried using 'disk management' to see if it recognises the flash drive ?

Not seen in disc Management and I have also uninstalled the drivers and re insalled its is just that USB stick that is not found.

Latest: I had an idea and copied the files to an SD card. Quick and easy and no problems at all.

 

I am taking all the drives etc to a local IT specialist late this afternoon.

Sounds a dodgy drive. Could try it in a different PC before you go.

The computer guy says the usb is toast.

So that is two now and an ssd that have done this.

Waiting now for a new USB and an SSD.

I moved the files from the old HDD to an SD card easily so no corruption there. I will now use that to move the files to the new SSD. I ansl moved them from the old HDD and converted them to .png. I converted back to .jpg when moving them to another SD so I have all my precious files now on 2 SDs. But when it arrives I stioll need to move them to the USB without it corrupting again. 
I am in mental turmoil!

Do you know why your flash drives are no good?  It's odd to have two fail.  Where are you buying them from, what brand and size?

I think they were good but got wrecked by these files.

They are unbranded wooden, boxed and engraved from two different suppliers.

You are trying to archive some photos for your kids to keep. Do you not think it would be wise to buy the best quality USB sticks if they are intended for long-term storage?

Yes I accept your point and that is why I am ssvimg all my files on HDDs and an SSD.

I just wanted to gift them an easily accessed method. Presented engraved in a wooden box.

I think I have reached the end of this saga now because the files I saved to SD card have now all gone over to the new Western Digital SSD that just arrived. I have another USB on its way from another supplier so should be ok this time I think.

Thanks to all for advice. The corruption and usb destroying files mystery will remain unsolved.

Have a look at mega.nz. You can get 20GB of cloud storage free; you can rent more if you wish but 20GB will be adequate for your photos. I separate family photos from all the rest and archive them to Mega; you can allow access to anybody you want so you can give your kids access. It's a completely free service and the only communication you get from them is a reminder that you haven't logged in for a while - have a look and give it a try.
