settings/system/recovery?

Click system restore in the 'Type here to search' box bottem left of screen next to the Windows icon

'bottom'

settings,update and security, restore

NB: Windows Restore is turned OFF by default in Windows 10.  If you've not created any restore points yourself, it's likely that you won't find any points to restore your system to.

Running the System File Checker might be a better option for you:

thanks guys I'll give your suggestions a try but a problem I have is that I can't get a flashing cursor in the search box (bottom of screen left) so I can't type anything in it.

Have you tried rebooting?

^^^ You don't need to use the Search box.

Press the Windows key and X together.

Select 'Command Prompt (Admin)'.

Then follow the instructions in my link above, starting from Step 3.
