Lost Debit Card Replacement

Someone I know lost their debit card on Sunday.  She rang the bank and cancelled it and the card was subsequently found and returned to her.  The bank told her a replacement would be sent by post within 7-10 days.  Not prepared to wait, she went straight to her local branch as soon as they opened this morning and says a replacement was 'printed out' in 5 minutes and given to her.    I'm struggling to believe that.  Is it possible?

Surely doing it in branch makes it easier to forge/duplicate

10.58 Metro must then be one bank who dont use this outside company, the tv program I saw produced cards for all banks. Not to sure why shes keeping the same pin number, it would be wise to change it, this I'm sure everyone knows can be done at the cash machine.

naomi - why lax security? I had the old card and I could sign to prove who I was. How is it any less secure than the bank posting a new card to you? The bank clearly have a record of your PIN so it's no problem writing it on a new card; they don't need to see what it it, just copy it from bank records onto the new card.

Their security procedures don't sound too hot, rosetta.

It seems she was correct. From their website,

"Please be aware that the quickest way to get your replacement card is at the store as you can get it printed right then and there. It might take up to get 7 days to receive it if you request it over the phone or via our website/mobile app."

If she's using the same pin mumber how do they know the old card hasn't been cloned?

When I got a replacement card because the old one stopped being recognized, it had the same PIN but the expiry date had changed.

It all sounds a bit Mickey Mouse to me.  A reminder NOT to bank with Metro.

The three-digit security number was also different.

Also, the three-digit securitynnumber on the back next to the signature might have changed

The new card has a different 3-digit security code on the back. The card with the old code has been cancelled so can't be used. When you get a replacement card from the bank because your current one is about to expire it always has the same PIN as the old card; only the 3-digit cade and expiry date have changed.

Hmmm ... still sounds dicey to me.

Thanks for all your answers.  Interesting converasation.  You learn something every day.

naomi - are you telling us that when you get a replacement card from your bank it doesn't have the same PIN as the card it is replacing? We have accounts with 4 banks and credit cards with some others and never has the PIN been different on a replacement card.

Question Author

No I'm not saying that, bhg.  I can't remember what happened with my cards in the past.  It's not something I've ever thought about.  I'm just gobsmacked that someone can walk into a bank and get a new card in five minutes.  I thought security for all that sort of thing was really strictly regulated.

I must say it feels more secure to me that you turn up at the bank in person, prove who you are and they create a card and hand it to you than for it to be sent out by post where it can be intercepted.

Don't use Metro Bank anyway...They've had financial problems recently. Not what you want to hear about your bank!

Confusing PIN and CPC?

Perhaps the card manufacturer is just down the road from the bank. ;-)
