The Inquisitor is well beyond my pay grade but I like to read the solution on fifteensquared to marvel at the solution .

However the solution to this one has baffled me.

Where do the original letters come from ? For example in 1a where does the original letter of U come from ?

To see what I'm on about go to https://www.fifteensquared.net/2024/03/19/inquisitor-1846-palimpsest-by-moreton/  .

I'll look in later as going out now .

He studied organ storing Cu, copper...leading to Wilson, Wilson's disease.

"He studied organ storing CD with broken violins (six missing) (6)"

WILSON is the answer - Wilson's disease involves a build-up of copper (CU) in the body organs - so definition is "He studied organ storing CU" - correcting the D from CD in the original clue gives you the U you need. (Then W=with & anagram of (VI)OLINS with the six (VI) missing

Thanks, Cranberry - I was out, answered while on a bus... and just supplied the origin of the U.
