on the rare occasions I go to any sort of supermarket I prefer the SS tills much more convenient.

I'd rather queue for half an hour for a self-service till than go to a staffed one!I much prefer machines to people and I find it easier to pack my bags when it's me that chooses the order that my purchases get scanned in, rather than a check-out operator.  (e.g. if I'm doing the scanning myself, I'll put all of the frozen and chilled items through together, so that...

Surely with a till operator scanning and customer packing it must be quicker than doing both your self.

I use Smart Shop, so actually paying is a doddle...and my bag is already packed as I want it 😅 

TTT, you were suggesting the problem was with the user not listening to the instructions. I listened extremely carefully and clicked Finish and Pay oas ordered.  The machine then went on the blink so I couldn't pay.

Is that too difficult for you?

Re the best answer, obviously New Judge is unavailable  so the next sycophancy target is shuffled in instead

 

Just a couple of things, who loads the stuff onto the belt at the manned checkout and, as you've mentioned on the odd occasion, you're not a people person so obviously the blinking eye of the robotic checkout may suit better.

They're an example of service denial and expecting the non-valued customer to do the till work unpaid. A clear indication of how our society is degrading, standards falling through the floor, culture getting destroyed, and in this case caused by corporate greed imposing whatever it wants on the public in an effort to increase their bottom line. And we aren't even considering the lost job opportunities for those in need of employment. How can anyone doubt what the issues are ?

speaking of technology ..."The Ministry of Defence has suffered a significant data breach and the personal information of UK military personnel has been hacked." Just when a machine should throw a wobbly and keep someone out, it doesn't. The MOD and M&S should swap computers. "This is not just an aircraft carrier, this is an M&S aircraft carrier" has a good ring.

23:54 that's your view, I find it much more convenient to scan my own in the order I want and pack it how I want taking the time I want.

I prefer a manned till as I'm a regular in our Sainsbury's and I like chatting to the staff.

However. 
I nearly always use the self service as it's a lot quicker due to the long queues at the one or two tills that are open. It's perverse to spend half the day queuing to avoid them IMO.

If you lay your stuff on the belt in the order you want - heavy first, frozen together the operator will scan them through like that for you to pack. They don't take stuff from the back first!

I have three large open bags in my trolley, ready to pack at the checkout.  Very quick and easy to pack my shopping in the order I want especially as I group all my shopping on the conveyor belt

I remember going to the Co-op. You stood at the counter and gave the assistant your shopping list. He/she went and got the stuff from the shelves, noted the price, wrapped it & put it in your bag.

You could ask for different thickness of bacon at the meat counter.

A laundry van used to collect & return your washing each week.

The garage man used to fill your tank, check your oil & wipe your window.

I do the same as last 2 posts and find it easy.  I will use self checkout if I only have a few items but not otherwise.  In fact sometimes the manned checkouts are quicker.

I think they are great, yes they have hiccups and booze can be annoying as it needs approval bot othersie I consider it an advancement.

Ihave used them it Bruxelles when I worked there, they can even change the language(as I discovered after a few months after a member of staff came over and asked why I was using FRench).

But you are not are you, as you admirably demonstate on here regualarly so you revert to attacking other Abers.

Too many items need an assistant to 'approve' when I self scan.  Paracetamol, ibuprofen, booze, razor blades, weedkiller, glue/solvents, laxatives - even chocolate liquers.

At Sainsbury's you can Smart Shop (as has already been mentioned), so everything is scanned and bagged as you go around the shop. Not only that, if money is tight, you can keep an eye on how much money you're spending, without having to do the calculations in your head or with a calculator. Occasionally you'll get a 'bag check', which means a member of staff has to scan a certain number of items at random.

 

I haven't been to a manned till, at all, in over 9 years. Ever since I got on the wagon, and stayed on it, I've not had to have anyone authorise the sale of alcohol, so I very rarely need help from a member of staff whilst going through the self service checkouts. I'm like Chris, I'd rather queue for a self service checkout.
