Now I have my new laptop, I would like to link it to my dads internet account through wireless. My laptop is wireless but my desktop computer isn't. I have the wireless router but i also need a wireless adapter to put but in the usb of my desktop computer. Can anyone recommend one? my desktop computer is a dell dimension 3100, not very old.
Hi shopaholic,
You can buy wireless USB adapters almost anywhere these days. Argos have a selection which will work for both laptops and desktops. Can I ask which brand of router you are trying to connect to Belkin / Netgear etc. as most router manufactuers also sell compatible wireless adapters.
For laptops only
adapter is for the desktop computer not the laptop. Laptop is already wireless. I'm using netgear router. I want an adapter that will give a good signal.
In that case any of those listed in Argos would do. I use a Belkin adapter with a Netgear router with no problems. The signal strength coming from the router to the pc depends on your environment. If the signal has to pass through 3 or 4 brick walls then it will be quite weak when it reaches the pc. If the pc is upstairs directly above the router with only the floorboards in between then you will get a good signal. Hope this helps.
no messing ... forget saving 50p
just get the same brand as your router
that way you know that they'll both talk the same language
usb is usb ... as long as you are on XP or vista ... there is no reason why the dell cares what brand you use
even better ... use wire - it wont "be exactly the same as if the desktop were wireless" ....
it will be at least twice as fast (generally much more than that) and many many more times more resilient to interference ... and will cost less than 4.00
