Car Graphics/Decals

Hi there, I just wanted some objective advice (as Ebay Sellers probably aren't going to point out the negatives of their products!).
You can buy decals for the body of your car: do they damage paintwork? And do they wash off when you wash your car (by hand)?
Don't want opinions on appearance etc., just the practicalities.

I had some big dragons on my Scooby for 2 years with no problems - when I came to sell the car they came off easy with a hair dryer and left no marks or glue or difference in paint colour.
