OH and I have been invited to a wedding in London in October. The dress code is Tuxedo. Does that mean that tux is obligatory, or can OH wear a regular dinner suit. Also - if tuxedo is the order of the day, what sort of dress code is it for the ladies. An eveningy type dress, or must it be a full ballgown type long dress? I rang up an evening suit hire place today, but was told that they didn't know about that aspect.

Would be grateful for any advice. Cheers, Chox.

I think you can wear a cocktail dress if the chap is wearing a tux - and I am fairly sure that a tux will mean a bow tie and a cummerbund. You will look out of place if you only wear a suit. (Gordon Brown only wore a suit to the Lord Mayor's Dinner which was black tie, he looked as if he hadn't bothered to dress up.)
Tuxedo is same as dinner jacket in UK. However in Texas USA tux jacket is often worn with jeans a cowboy boots. Would think for females evening or cocktail dress.
If you are uncertain, could you not ask them just to be sure?

tuxedo if specified means exactly that... correct attire for ladies is glitzy cocktail dress or a simpler long dress not a ball gown....

Many thanks, folks. Appreciate all your advice. I didn't realise that Tuxedo is just a dinner jacket by another name. Cheers, Chox,.
