Why does my cat attack me?

I have a rescue cat for 4 years now & though he has been hard work to build up a trusting relationship I really thought I'd cracked it. Just recently he has started to hide & then spring out & attack my legs. Tonight was the last straw when he pounced & I have ended up with 5 wounds that all bled quite a bit. I have looked in my cat behaviour book & it tells me that he is only playing!!! Is he taking out his hunting instincts on the person who feeds him & keeps him because there are no mice about yet or is he just evil? Has any of you out there encountered this problem & how did you resolve it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
