seems a non story. a play was writ. the play commissioner didn't like it. the script was rejected. the end. curtain close.

She sounds like a silly, sterile non entity who'se been allowed a position of authority when she's clearly unsuited for the task.
Since WWII is a violent, brutal, subject matter 'Disneyfying' it would be an insult to those who lived and died throughout it- I am personally more offended by that than by any reference to the invasion of Poland or swearing.
She should read ' Bent' or 'Good' if she thinks that war is something silly and flippant that can be sanitised.

It was part of a 'pageant' about the castle's history primarily to entertain, secondly to educate.

And for an audience that could include young children and visitors from all over the world who had bought into a visit - not a play about the war.

I think the manager who commissioned the work had every right to tone it down if she thought it would better suit its purpose and audience.

She will be judged on visitor figures not by theatre critics.

Seriously ankou- if you commision a work about WWII, are you seriously going to be surprised if they mention Jews, the Holocaust, fighting or the invasion of Poland? I personally think the woman must be deranged.

maybe steve, but if i asked someone to write a me a christmas play and they handed something that was all about god and jesus i'd tell them thanks but no thanks.

as i sad above how can we really say what was so 'bad' other than what this article tells us (which sems to be mostly from tinson) but if she is guilty of anything then that would be choosing the wrong playwright, or not being clear enough on her requirements in the 1st place.

from what i undestand the play included nazis inflicting buggary (sic) on polish jews.

Zeuhl, that was my first thought; but the report says the play was to be for adults only. I have no quarrel with her right to reject something that's been commissioned; it's her job. But it's possible she's overestimating visitors' primness.
