Sycosis Barbae
15 Answers
Hi Folks
I was recently diagnosed as suffering from 'Sycosis Barbae' which, in layman's term, is an infection of the hair follicles around the beard area.
I have now gone through 2 courses of antibiotics and am using a cream 'Fucibet' twice daily .... to no avail ....
I've now had this condition for several weeks and wondered if anyone has suffered from the same and can recommend any other treatments given my GP appears to be 'shooting in the dark' as to how to treat it !
Thanks folks.

Well the treatment that you have had for a bacterial infection is correct..... .if it is bacterial. I would go back to the GP and ask if he could send a hair sample to exclude a fungal infection.

Hi
The rash is a collection of pimples or spots of varying sizes ... some 'weep' to an extent, others are kind of 'scabbed' & others just look unpleasant ! They are gathered around my cheek, jaw & neck on one side of my face. They are not painful except when I shave but do itch occasionally ... they do disappear save for the stubborn, larger ones but the ones that disappear are quickly replaced by more ...
Sorry for being graphic and thank you for replying ...

stevie, I'm not making fun, but this sounds exactly like what my cat had a month ago - his furry chin was covered in blackheads and little pustules. The vet prescribed the human cream Bactroban to be rubbed into the fur twice a day - it kills staphylococcus aureus and staph pyogens and contains mupirocin calcium. The vet said the cat's problem is similar to human skin infection in this facial area. It could be worth a try - it worked in a couple of weeks for the cat.
