As a child I had terrible night terrors, but grew out of them. Hadn't had one for years but woke up crying a couple of nights ago.
What proof is there that cheese can make you have nightmares?
Whenever I have nightmares they usually involve me killing people by horrible means and they are really vivid - I remember trying to stab a woman once and the knife wouldn't go in so I took my shoe off and tried to hammer it into her chest, when that didn't work I slit her throat and I could smell the blood and feel it's warm stickiness on my arms. I dunno what that says about me or how you make them stop...
Oh Karen, I am so pleased you posted that, because I have similar dreams - I also dream that I am a vampire swooping down on people. Even in my dream I am totally unhappy about it - I am not enjoying it at all.

\\\Now the substances behind such unwanted nightmares are being tracked down. Tyramine, the main culprit, is based on the carbon ring of Kekulé's dream, and is broken down by the same enzymes as those hard at work during paradoxical sleep.
Aged cheeses, like Stilton, and heavy red wines are most to blame, while soy sauce and smoked fish are both rich in the stuff.\\

No idea of the link, but will try and find it.
Thank Sqad, never to old to learn.

What a huge selection of fascinating answers, thank you everyone- I'll lay off the cheese and try not to let stress get the better of me, haven't had one last night so fingers crossed for tonight:)
jno, I have found that too, if too hot then I have nightmares - horrible they are too. Since I found that out I try to not cover up too much when going to sleep.
nox,,,,,,,,,,,,,, im sorry i hav^nt read all the replies but i did see your original op[, horrible things nightmares/night terrors, are they related to alcohol intake ? i do feel stress has a major part to play though, wheather the stress is recognised or not. be well.

I don't think it's alcohol Anne as I don't drink anymore really, barring the odd glass of wine if I'm out to dinner or the odd beer in a pub, as I used to have quite an alcohol problem. Mind you I used also to have a pretty big drug problem so it could be a very late side effect of that- but we're talking on both counts 15 years ago now really, so I think it's more likely that I've not given myself enough time to meditate and do the things I normally do because I've been so stressed and busy lately.
nox.......... you really dont have a problem, ive just read the post, " it only happens when im sleeping alone ). ya wee devil :) and as an aside, i recall your eloquent posts from your past, when are you going to write that book ?

Lol... I've actually written it, and my ex based a stage play on some of it, well aspects of it with a ficticious protagonist as the main character who has cause to encounter me in her youth. I meet a stickey end in her version though, so I was a bit shocked, but I probably would have if she hadn't rescued me so I suppose that's fair enough. As to whether I'll ever submit what I wrote for publication is an entirely other thing though, lots of people that woud affect, but you never know.
always, the special lady who rescued you. :)

I can't remember the last nightmare I had. I do have really weird dreams though, so weird that I can't really put them into words to tell you lol!

This may sound really stupid but when I was wee, my brother brought me back a dream catcher from Argentina and I really believed in it's powers. I still have it up and maybe the belief I had when I was wee was that strong that it has sunk into my subconcious mind, stopping me from having nightmares even now.

You know that because i've really thought about this now, i'm going to have a horrific nightmare tonight!!
