A few years ago a northern irish bloke used to introduce films on channel 4 (I think, though it could have been bbc 2) with a load of pretentious twaddle about what it all meant. Has since disappeared. What was his name?

Sounds very much like Tom Paulin, actually born in Leeds, but raised in Belfast (hence the accent).

Yes, he was very pretentious!
Ah no, cancel that! It was a different pretentious git - Mark something or other I think. You've got me on a mission now!
You may be thinking of MovieDrome on BBC2. I think the guy was Alex Cox. Essentially he'd do a few minutes on a "cult" film before the film was played. Some of the films where excellent.
Alex Cox is a Liverpudlian, I dont remember him having an Irish sounding accent although it's a lot of years since I saw him on TV

It does sound like Tom Paulin, and the 'Mark' prertnetious git must be mark lawson, who hosts Newsnight's Late Review (late chattering classes up themselves bore-fest) is probably too long a title, but more accurate!

Alex Cox hasn't got an Irish accent, I have one of his Moviedrome trailers on a film I taped years ago.

Could the pretentious Mark be Mark Kermode /or as I call him Mark Commode because he is so full of ????
The bloke I'm thinking of was quite young, definitely had a kind of sing-song Irish accent, I think his first name was Mark (although I could be wrong), and he...talked...very...slowly...and...deliberately, as if he thought the viewers were stupid. Not Mark Kermode (nor Commode!)

That sounds like the guy. Talked very slowly and patronisingly and talked about really obscure things like they were completely obvious - things like "obviously the preponderance of reds and oranges in this scene displays the communist leanings of the film-maker".
YEEEESSSSS!! Got him!

It was Mark COUSINS. Phew. Going for a lie down now.

Aaaah - That's him, nice one! And those little introducing film programmes he was on were called scene by scene, bbc 2 not channel 4. Cheers
