I've got a box of 'Robin' starch which I've had since early 60s its still in good condition found it when we moved house. Took it to a collectors fair a couple of years back & a colloctor of Home bric-a-brac offered me £10 for it.
(Didn't sell)
My kids say its part of their childhood, they remember how their school shirts used to stand up on their own when I'd ironed them.
Robin starch! Remember it from laundry lessons at Grammar school. Yes, we did have practical skills taught, including (proper) cookery and needlework. All girls of course.
Incredible isn't it daisy - they taught us at grammar school to make blancmange from scratch, and how to sew a run and fell seam, but after I left school I still had to go out and learn to type. Typing was for the secondary modern students.
boxtops, still can't type! Loathe blancmange but remember the seams, the rice pudding carried home on my bike. What a mess! My shirt ironing is superb. Oh for a blue bag! Had to knit my own cerise jersey to wear as a prefect. Taught to crochet. Oh and managed 3 a levels, 2 S levels and University entrance English. Thank goodness there was no time to be taught PSE and Citizenship!
I learned to use a sewing machine and made a nightie. I remember making a cake in domestic science (as it was called then) and taking a pair of dad's socks to launder. I was in a Commercial class where we were taught the basics of book-keeping, French and shorthand and typing.
Don't know about Robin Starch but I use a spray on starch that I found in the supermarket, either Tesco or Sainsburys to spray on my tablecloths when I iron them - it gives a pretty good result
Er, only got one tablecloth, linen, edged with crochet work 4 inches deep by my aunt. 21st birthday present. Unfortuately no dining room and laptop is on the table.
