Are stab-proof hoodies an over-reaction?
3 Answers
An Essex firm has started making stab-proof hoodies lined with Kevlar aimed at safety-conscious teenagers. Newspaper reports of stabbings have increased over the last few years and young people seem to be more wary of walking down the street unprotected. The company have also contacted schools to discuss the possibility of making school uniforms lined with stab-proof materials. Do you think that stab-proof hoodies/school uniforms are a reasonable reaction to the threat of stabbings? Are young people really in that much danger?

Fashion will change so that the hoodie will become obsolete.
This will be a positive thing due to the amount of anonymity they cause, gang warefare they promote and fear they spread.
Making a hoodie stab proof would make someone wearing it feel superior and may even be a cause of increased stabbing as the wearer would provoke an attack, knowing he (it is rarely a she) would not sustain injury (foolishly incorrect).
Ergo, no... stab proof hoodies are not a good idea. I would rather there be metal detectors and bags searched at schools than the kids wear bullet proof vests or have body guards.
People in general have always been in danger and always will. But by removing some of the causes, accelerators or initiators of crime, it would help to tackle some aspects and hopefully decrease attacks.
