OK we've all seen about Mr Huhne and Ms Price and how they are now paying the price for their lies.

Some posters deem it "OK" to lie about the little things. Strangely, I also saw this article today where it seems that more and more of us will lie to get a small fiscal advantage http://www.confused.com/home-insurance/articles/are-you-an-honest-or-opportunistic-insurance-fraudster.

So where do you consider the line is drawn between honesty and dishonesty? Is it OK to lie about a "small" insurance claim? Is it OK to take your partner's driving points? Is it OK to lie as long as you don't get caught.........

Your views........

(AND this is NOT about the Huhne/Price sentencing - that's being covered elsewhere).

I don't bother lying about anything, it's not worth the hassle of trying to remember what the lie was (might sugar coat things a bit for the kids, but always tell them the truth about stuff or say they don't need/are too young to know). But ... I haven't ever actually done anything that could get me into proper bother so I don't know if I would be capable of it.
No, it's not, I can't stand lies and deceit about anything.
The link didn't work for me BM. As for lying I think it is sometimes necessary. Though not in the mentioned case.

Does the second link work, Jeza?
As Judge Judy once said:
If you always tell the truth, good things will happen.
If you tell lies, one day, it will come back and bite you on the "arris"
Question Author
Absolutely, the Winner.

OK, so I'll admit to telling the odd white lie to Mr BM "no dear it only cost £60". But I mean in a serious context - ie to insurance companies or to the taxman or to the police.
Going back to your link which I can now see. I have been insured for all of my married life and never claimed. When I said the mentioned link I was speaking of Chris and Vicki.
I'm not comfortable telling fibs about anything, and not a good liar because I would probably forget what I'd said. White lies to save face for someone but not a lie where it would mean outright dishonesty.
Don't know but if there is one thing I am sure about it is that no-one can go through life without telling lies of one kind or another. All right, it might be a teensy weensy one or even a small exaggeration but it is impossible to get through life lily white! Even saying that you have never told a lie in your life, could in fact be a lie in itself.
//so I'll admit to telling the odd white lie to Mr BM//

So you DO know where to "draw the line" !

lol

In fact, I think we are it total agreement, Barmaid.

We just have our lines in slightly different places, that's all.

Is it OK to lie as long as you don't get caught.........

Obviously
Also when I said it is sometimes necessary to lie I also meant that. For instance, my mother was scared to death of dying so I told her not to be so daft. You're having a panic attack again I said so calm down. You'll be getting your telegram from the queen. She did calm down, squeezed my hand and died.

Yes well I wouldn't lie to anyone officially JJ, so no, we don't agree. Since on the occasion Mr BM got flashed by a camera he said "we could just say we didn't know who was driving" to which I responded "no chance, because I KNOW it was you".

Ultimately telling a small fib to Mr BM about the price of a piece of silver isn't actually going to pervert the course of justice or obtain a pecuniary advantage. It just might avoid a row.
I don't lie, my memory is too crap.
Dont you think officials lie by making false allegations and be free from legal recourse.

Like accusations from councils about multiple property occupation, providing names that I know occupy independant dwellings & have to shop them to save myself.
Question Author
I KNOW officials lie Tambo, be assured of that. Indeed, you might want to watch this space for that particular unveiling.

Anyway, the point is this - Is it OK to lie to the authorities - whether it be a small one or a biggie?
No BM big lies will be found out and get you in deeper trouble than you're already in. Little lies are often necessary.
I dont like having to tell councils who lives where just because I've lived here the longest.
It is only O.K. to lie to the authorities if you know you can get away with it. As this is not very likely in the long run, then best not to lie to them. The punishment for getting caught is just not worth the satisfaction of telling the lie in the first place.
