She was greek (Macedonian in fact) a relative of Alexanders friend and one of the Companions Ptolomy. After Alexander died, his generals carved up the massive empire, and Ptolomy took Egypt. Since then, all the Ptolomys and rulers of Egypt (until Cleo) were desendants of him!
