A Picture of Britain

Did anyone see A Picture of Britain on Sunday night? The programme opened with David Dimbleby walking up Canal St. in Manchester and talking about L. S. Lowry. He said that all the scenes he painted have gone for ever, but that isn't true. Only 150 yards from where I live, you can go and stand on the exact spot where Lowry stood and still see virtually the same scene that Lowry painted. A couple of buildings have been demolished but mostly it is still the same. I wonder if there are any more scenes still out there?

What about Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester, Lowry painted that and I don't think it's changed that much.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you 10C!  Here's the answer from our gallery person:

There is very little existing landscape as a consequence of urban development, Salford Quays being a prime example.  Also a lot of the work that LS Lowry did he did from memory or were an amalgamation of sketches that he had done while he was out and about - you've probably seen photographs of him sketching on backs of envelopes etc.

But there is quite a good book called Lowry's City by J Sandling and M Leber (they sell it in the shop!) - in which they have tried to identify some landscapes with his pictures which you may find of interest.
