As I’ve mentioned in the past I used to travel to Calais quite regularly, three or four times a year. I gave up a couple of years ago having witnessed one or two very dodgy episodes in and around the town. It’s a shame because, for a port, it is a nice little town with a few nice bars and eateries (if you know where to look) and one or two decent hotels for an overnighter.
Economically this shambles must have cost the town a fortune. Of course the French will blame anybody it suits them to for this situation. However the facts are straightforward. France decided to abandon its borders with its neighbours (and although the Schengen Agreement formalise this arrangement, effectively they had not been properly policed for years before that). The reason the migrants are in France is because the French have allowed them to enter, mainly from Italy. The latest “industrial action” in Calais is just a symptom of the French disease. No government wants to tackle it so it will go on. And, of course, France is one of our principle “partners” in Europe.
