Should This Country Become A Republic?
80 Answers
Today Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain's longest serving monarch.
It was suggested by a certain Left-Wing radio presenter, that when our Queen's reign finally comes to an end, the country should consider scrapping the monarchy and become a Republic, ruled by a President.
What could be gained by this, we are already ruled by a politician?
What do other ABers think?

Oddly enough anotheoldgit , I go to a polling station every 5 years or so to select my choice for Member of Parliament, I would have thought the same polling station could be used to allow me to put a cross on my selection for President.

Although I respect the Queen for what she has done for the country I am not a Royalist and believe that a Republic would be the best way forward. I think its degrading in this day and age to expect anyone to bow or curtsy to another person for the sole reason they were born into a certain family. Even worse people in other countries such as Jamaica, Australia and Canada have a foreigner as their ' sovereign leader' and this just harks back to the bad old days of whoever had 'a flag' or more men they could sacrifice in battle, the more countries they could conquer.
As a die-hard left-wing anti-British commie-loving ***... I like the queen and the institution of monarchy. If I were setting up a country from scratch there's no way I would have chosen a hereditary monarchy, but in the last century or so it's worked (mostly) rather well and long may it continue. This probably depends, however, on future monarchs following the present queen's example of being utterly apolitical -- as soon as a king or queen starts playing an active role in politics then he or she must be democratically accountable, but if not and the monarch limits themselves to official state functions only then I think we've seen in Her Majesty just how effective it can be to have a fixed point when change is all around.
Congratulations to her for such a long and effective reign.

They are not forced to be ruled by a 'foreigner' they have a choice to be part of the Commonwealth.
In 1999 Australia held a referendum to replace the Queen with a president, and they voted for keeping the Queen.

What a ridiculous idea!
It's a well known fact that the only thing that draws (pying) tourists to this island is the fact that there's a small woman who wears somewhat odd hats in public.
The whole industry would shut down overnight leaving hotels and guest houses no option but to tout for business among migrants and illegal immigrants just to keep their heads above water.
And what would all those very hairy soldiers in red jackets do for employment?
As I say, ridiculous.
