Is Cannabis A Gateway Drug? By which I take it you mean cannabis resin, the answer has to be yes, however you could say that everyone who smokes cannabis probably first smoked tobacco & drank alcohol.

The problem doesn't lie in the substances per se, but in those who take them, some people it has been found have a personality which leads them to addiction, the more fortunates, can take it or leave it at will.

I used to work with a guy that claimed dope was non addictive and harmless. So non addicted was he that he'd have to sneak out of work 5 times a day to partake. Eventually his mind went and his body just decayed, last I heard he was in some sort of institution. Pity because when he was fit he was a good technician.
Pixie knows what she's talking about, and I agree with her.

Thank you, boaty x
We know each other well enough pix. ;o}
Ever since 'early-man' realised that there was a great deal of fun to be had in ingesting various substances which altered his/her perceptions, lightened his/her moods, etc. the human race has been doing just that.

It is a pointless exercise to try and lay the blame at any particular substance as the 'gateway'. It would be far more practical to try and ensure that all benefits able to be derived from any such substance ought to be explored and implemented.
And that all problems need to be properly determined and addressed.....however uncomfortable that may be.

That is sweet, but that doesn't mean Pixie is correct.

Cannabis is not a hard drug. Also, there is no where near enough research on cannabis, especially when assessed over a long period of time, to know what "issues it causes".

If there was, I am sure that it wouldn't have been legalised in so many American states.

There is no denying that cannabis is linked to paranoia and schizophrenia, but in my opinion (because it's not been heavily researched to prove one way or the other) it simply brings it out in people who are prone, especially in their family, to such psychosis.
Yes.... and if we started treating mental health as a priority in the first place, that could make a big difference.
^^ to jth...
You didn't read my post properly (again...) thedevil.
Yes I saw many move on in the course of my work - mainly with a fatal conclusion.
What was your work, CAC?
Cannabis is not called a dangerous drug because in itself it isn't but it is known to lead onto harder drugs, which is why it is known as a dangerous substance, obvious, if you think about it.
No more than caffeine is.

Some can't seem to twig that those who try hard drugs will almost certainly try other stuff on route, whilst those who try soft stuff won't feel compelled to go further than they want.

One needs not to get oneself confused between cause and non-cause. Otherwise ridiculous conclusions end up getting drawn.
Watreboatman - "it is known to lead onto harder drugs"

It may be known, but it most cases people do not go on to use harder drugs. The article that ToraToraTora provided states that "the majority of people who use marijuana do not go on to use other, "harder" substances."

TTT - // Not every one who takes it moves on to harder drugs but everyone on harder drugs started on Cannabis. //

As I am sure you have realised by now, that statement is simply not correct.

The notion of a 'gateway' drug enforces the misconception that people who enjoy cannabis look for 'bigger highs' which is simply not true, any more than people who like wine move onto sherry and spirits.

It's a facile argument, and it has always had its believers, but that does not make it true. It's not.

Haha, I see you have flushed Spath out then TTT.

Not sure it is a gateway drug but due to it's ever increasing strength problems in the future will grow with it.
