Cycle lanes are designed by council highways planners - who all drive and do not cycle. Which is why there are thousands of photos online of daft and dangerous paths.

Long term they are trying to encourage cycling especially for short journeys. The best way to do that is make the roads as safe as possible for cyclists.
The road in the article has been slowed down for cars and speeded up for cycles.
//jno, the cycle lane is wider than the car lane! They could have halved the cycle lane and widened the 2 car lanes.//

Yes but the cycle lane is for 2-way traffic. So only allowing 5ft per bike?
//You have to allow for the cyclists huge righteousness./

You have to allow for some cyclists having huge arrises as well. Some of em on the promenade need 11ft wide lanes.

it's 2 way in theory but totally unusable for cyclists going the wrong way. Ie towards us in the picture, here is the local news story:

Time to start fining cyclist who don't use the cycle lanes when they are available, and when they use the public highway without insurance. The bloke who mows our lawn has to have 1 million quids worth of public liability cover despite not using a mower unless it is on private property.

That is not their function. Their job is to provide proper highways for all, but changing people's habits is not.
They make it wide enough for people to fall off and not get their head run over

You are so last century NJ

:-)
Maybe it's a 2 way cycle lane. Don't see one on the other side of the road
It's not the width that's surprising, it's there's somebody actually using it.
Perhaps it's an emergency airstrip Vulcan ... to fly in the refugees.
it is unbelievable, i don't understand why so many cyclists ignore road sense, and take their lives in their hands by crossing red lights and cycling on the pavement, putting people like me at risk of serious injury. As to that monstrosity, someone with a grudge against motorists must have designed it.
Drove down this road the other day, its a nightmare. Its also a raod not many would cycle down anyway, people from Colehill wouldn't use that road and the Farmers from the fields dont usually ride bikes.

It is very poorly thought out. And yes the Leigh road is the main road into Wimborne
