Further to all the recent posts regarding Muslims wearing the full veil ('specially the ones with mesh eye slits) - if such a person knocked on your door to read the gas or electric meter, would you:

1. Willingly let them in?
2. Ask them to lift their veil & show their face?
3. Or just turn them away?

Sensible answers only please!

I wouldn't answer the door in the first place probably.
Good Q Smudge.

I think I would ask for the veil to be lifted, or actually removed whilst in my house. If they refused to do so, then I would turn them away.
Definatel not, I'm still waiting for somone dressed in this way to commit a crime, if, or when it happens, watch the new, the aftermath will be interesting.
Here we have a genuine example of where a veil would hinder the ability to perfrom your job. I very much doubt you would be hired, as I would ask to see the card of anyone who was calling to check the gas. You have to be able to identify yourself, and thus is the reason we have probably never heard an example like this.
The argument that Smudge is presumably attempting to make is that if you can't see the person's face to check against an ID card, you're therefore opening yourself up to someone attempting to scam you.

The only problem with that is that you shouldn't ever trust your safety to merely checking that someone's face matches an ID card, even if they are not wearing a veil. It's a veritable piece of pi$$ to fake an ID.

As with anyone claiming to be a utility representative, if you wish to verify they are who they say they are, they will be happy to wait outside your property whilst you phone the relevant body. Get the number from the Yellow Pages or the Internet, not the supposed rep, since again, they can easily put whatever number they want on a card - eg an accomplice.

The utility can provide a number of items of data that you can check with the representative, not least of which is confirming that they have a representative in your area that day.

If you are still not convinced, don't open the door. A genuine representative will understand.

So, rely on the proper verification methods and you won't have any problems.
Ok.... I might be about to make a really stupid point here but it's kind of a question in itself.

I thought it was the women that wore the full veil? Therefore, if this is the case, would they be allowed to go out to work in what would be a male dominated enviroment in the first place?

And I would call the company and ask them to verify. I don't really see how this would be too much of an issue.
Why this obsession with the veil?
Cause it's been in the news recently with the teacher that wouldn't take it off I think Hal.
Not many Muslim women wear the full veil anyway.....

Good question smudge! I'd ask her to show her face and if she refused she'd have to read our meter through our letterbox. I mean that!
What if the person concerned was following the advice of a trick cyclist after them becoming irevocably mentaly disturbed because of their massive failure in any chance of becoming a succesful ventriloquist and, as an antidote, requiring a veil to hide that fact from the world? Wouldn't it be a bit anti-failed-ventriloquist-ist ? Not thaught of that have you!? Well there you go, I have.
I know, we're going loonier by the day. But we're happy.
Soz. smudge. you did say sensible answers only. Well my honest answer is , a moments supprise, a quick smile, a pointed finger at the meter then hold the door for them on their way out, re-seccure door when they leave. There now, meter read. That was easy.
That said , I would require a writen form of, and photographic evidence first.
........so I'm a catergory 2.
Why do you ask smudge, is it something you have been faced with, or is it just in case?
Vive La Revolucion ... it's coming, I'm telling you
i would not answer my door to a person wearing a hoodie so the same applies to a person wearing a veil
Hope I'm not hijacking the question, but do they get a lot of unsolved crime in countries where the full veil is common?

If I was a criminal, I think I'd wear a veil and steal stuff. Element of surprise, somewhere to hide and be anonymous, somewhere to hide the goods..

I'd let the person in and thank goodness it wasn't another person asking for money or clothes for charity or for me to vote for their political party.
Please do not take me seriously, but why can't we have a National Veil Day, and all dress-up in the full gear? We could then say that there was full integration throughout the nation, if only for one day. Not unlike what happened that Christmas Day in the trenches during WW1.

Regarding those who suggested keeping them waiting outside until they had contacted the Utility company to confirm identity. Could anyone be so cruel, have they tried to speak to a human on the other end of the phone, even after pressing the menu of numourous phone buttons?

Thank you for your answers.

Not only would my question apply to veiled women (or men in disguise - you never know), it would also apply to men or women wearing balaclavas, or scarves wrapped around their faces, covering their mouths & noses, 'specially in the cold winter weather!

In the past, both men & women wearing protective hooded jackets have knocked on my door in such bad weather & after carefully reading their identity tags, have been happy to stay by the door, whilst they read the meter/s. I expect it's because I could see their faces on opening the door!

I wouldn't let anyone in my house dressed in one of these either: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balaclava - I would ask them to remove it, the same as I would a veiled person.

P.S. I met some really lovely Muslim nurses at the hospital yesterday, so my question has nothing to with Muslims in general - it has however, everthing to do with not knowing who is under full veils - that's all.
