What do you think? Do you feel sorry for him and hope he can get the help? or do you think its his own fault and why should he get help?

His so called love ones are the problem. Ok he may have an addiction but if he can't move he can't eat! tada another problem sorted by the wisdom of the Geezer!
Thats just wrong, especially as he has no medical reasons and by his own admission just eats a lot! when he started to put the weight on did it not cross his mind "hmmm, maybe I should eat a little less and exercise a little more"
Also what is his partner doing just bringing him food whenever he wants it, surely once he got to the state he couldn't even get out of bed and get his own food then a diet would be pretty easy to enforce.
bravejordy, I'll take those caramel doughnuts off your hands if you don't want them, I need to put weight on.

I was going to say watch out for it happening in this country but then I remmeberd what McBottle has done to us and realized no one could afford to eat 30K calories.
Just out of interest what medical condition causes weight to be put on. Surley no matter how your body proceses food if you dont put it in the gate then it wont go on your gut.(or anywhere else).

That's very true YMB and in the words of Scotty, "ya cannee change the laws a physics capatain", However there are various syndromes that in varying degrees cause the sufferrer to always be hungry, eg Prada Willy I think it is. Then there are slowdown metabolism type things but they are nearly always excuses. After all there were no fat people in Belsen. I think in this case it's just weak will and stupid Mrs sysdrome! Just feed him loads of water and a healthy diet, then if he fancies a Pizza he'll have to lose about 40 stone and he can go and get one.
Not convinced,
How is it that most of us stay roughly the same weight? Do we accurately judge and balance the calories consumed against exercise?
I suspect that few of us could reach that weight no matter what we ate our bodies would stop taking in nourishment and laying down fat.
Sure we'd get fat, really fat, Sumo wrestler fat but as fat as that?
I suspect what we have here is a "perfect storm" of an individual with appetite and metabolic disorder as well as the inability to resist them.
I mean we all know people with no will power but I doubt any of us knows anyone that size

I feel you have to sympathise with this situation, which is a combination of two (or more) individuals with psychological problems.
No-one 'allows' themselves to get into a state like this - this individual has serious psychological problems obviously coupled with phsyical problems connected to digestion and fat conversion.
Add to that a partner who has a different set of psychological problems that prevent her from seeing the on-going situation, much less doing something about it.
There are large sections of society who have no real control over their lives. They allow things to simply 'happen' to them, because they lack the mental capaicty to take any sort of charge of their circumstances.
Hopefully this man seriously intends to change, for the sake of his family and his potenail life - he is obvilously close to death.
Because western society has ain in-built superiority / loathing atrtitude to obesity, it is easy to condemn this man as simply greedy and / or stupid, but it is plain his problems are far more complex and deep-seatied than that.

That poor man! That is no way to live.
I think I feel a mixture of pity for him and anger that he has allowed himself to get that big, also anger at his partner for feeding him the unhealthy meals. He is at the stage now where he can't move at all so if I were his carer I would just feed him healthy foods, what the heck is he going to do about it if you just cut off his access to junk food!

Then you need to think a bit more carefully about some of these disorders.
Imagine being hungry, really hungry as hungry as you can recall ever being.
Now imagine that all day and all night no matter how much you eat.
That's the sort of disorder Loosehead's referring to.
"Simple - stop eating" isn't really usefull advice in that situation is it?
Remember too that he's in the US so there's no national health system. Here he'd have probably had medical help long before he got to this state

I totally go along with Andy Hughes. I feel extremely sorry for this man who is a victim of circumstances. He must be in pain both physically and mentally. It's no good saying it's his own fault. It probably is, but that doesn't mean he had the ability to do anything about it without proper professional help.
I hope they can save him.
