The "uproar"* isn't exactly because an actor is going to act -- it's because, in so doing, he's taking away a role from someone else who is, at least in principle, more suited to play the part.

*It's probably an exaggerated uproar anyway.

For myself I'm not particularly bothered, but I still figure it's worth pointing out the difference between protesting Jack Whitehall's ability to act the part, and protesting the resulting loss of a high-profile role for an up-and-coming LGBT actor.

Pantomime dames don't come into it, nor do doctors, bus drivers, or whatever other completely inadequate comparison this thread can come up with.
