Proper Old Fashioned Hot Chocolate

My wife has been reminiscing about the 'proper' hot chocolate her mother used to make, not the instant drink made from powder.

I'd like to make her some so would appreciate your recipe for traditional hot chocolate.

I've looked online but nothing really hits the mark

We have a hot chocolate most Winter afternoons. Simply hot milk and this....

If you think it's pricey (which it is), make your own choc flakes with decent choc bar and grater. I foam some hot milk (with a milk frother whisk) and stir in to the above-made beverage.

There were no such gadgets when my wife was a little girl enjoying her hot chocolate.

Take a trip to Holland for 'eine chocolade warme met slagroom' - seriously good. They use good chocolate, mjelk, and then top it with this thick 'savoury' whipped cream that's about an inch or so deep.....

It sounds lovely but that is not the drink my wife is hankering after.  I'm sure her mother wasn't Dutch :)
