Will they allow the holidaymakers to have a drink?
I lived in Saudi for 3 years and the Red Sea coast has some of the best beaches in the world but so far VERY restricted access. It also has arguably the best scuba diving waters in the world. A lot of the Expats working in Saudi only went there to get access to the diving waters.
Things will have to change due to the reduced demand for oil with the switch to electric cars. Saudi Arabia's only source of income is oil and the pilgrimage trade to Mecca.
85% of the Kingdom's income is from oil sales and they are dropping fast. Also at the moment you need a visa just to get on an aircraft to Saudi, you even need a visa just to transit from one airport to another.
They might need to rethink the public floggings and beheadings as well! Would not look good on the holiday brochures !!

I see it's going to be 'visa free' so there will need to be a special airport dedicated to just the beach resort with no access to the rest of the Kingdom.

They are going to have to, for decades they have just assumed that the oil revenue will never diminish. There is no tax on income or purchases in Saudi at least not at present. I can't see a one off tourist resort solving the problem.

I recall reading an article that argued that Saudi Arabia was gong to be in financial trouble in the medium term future as apart from oil, they produce nothing whatsoever. Everything has to be imported.

Other similar adjoining countries realised the folly of relying on the one source of income years ago, which is why we now have places like Dubai.....sandy deserts, transformed into tourist attractions.

But the Saudis are being left behind. The already have serious civil unrest, which can only get worse as time goes on.

I`ve often thought that they must be eyeing up the tourism revenue that other Gulf states are enjoying and would want a part of it. Having seen some of the people that go to Dubai, I doubt they will attract too many Westerners if they don't allow them to drink. They may do well from other Gulf tourists though.
