How can I get a flower named after my mum?

I have a great passion for my garden and for the huge variety of plants in it. This passion has to be attributed to the infectious enthusiasm displayed by my mum as I grew up. She seemed to have the magical touch, propogating difficult subjects and reviving friends "dead" plants, seemingly without effort.

My mum is no longer with us but she remains ever present in my garden through plants propogated or grown from seed by her.

I would love to have a flower/plant named after her. Just how do I go about doing this?

Lots of specialist plant nurseries are always breeding new varieties and colours of plants. A colleague of mine had a rose named after his wife to celebrate the birth of their son. I'll contact him and try to find out how he achieved it. Meanwhile, if you try Googling Specialist Plant Growers (or something similar) it might flag up some contacts whom you could contact. (Growers of Sweet Peas and Roses especially come to mind).

As promised, I contacted my friend. Here is his response. Don't know whether it's helpful or not but I pass it on for what it's worth and hope that you succeed in your efforts.

"Firstly you phone up the Rose Society. The first thing they do is laugh. Commercially named roses, like Jill Dando, cost thousands upon thousands of pounds (I was told �15,000). However there are many growers, hoping to have their roses "adopted" commercially and then they sell the stock. However each year these growers have roses left over that are not brought commercially and these you can buy at the end of their season .... they cost between �1,000 and �1,500 and then they will be registered for you, but you will not be able to walk into your Garden Centre and buy them."
