Lockdown For The Over 70

Re the rules on lockdown for the over70 — are they allowed to go shopping for food? A couple next door go once a week to a supermarket and get enough supplies to last the week and that is their only outing. They keep in good health

Why have I done this?
I really don’t know looking at yesterday’s Hyde Park demonstrators

In spite of all the scaremongering, we all need to find and do what we are comfortable with. I know there are quite a few over 70s here who have gone out regularly to shop. I haven't except for a few trips to go to the atm, and top up my meters in recent weeks. I switched to online as I hate queuing.
//It depends on whether or not they have been classed as extremely vulnerable in which case they are only allowed out to meet one person. not go shopping.//
This short thread demonstrates the confusion there has been throughout this fiasco. There has never been any separate legislation or rules for any age group or any particularly vulnerable group. Everybody has always been allowed to go out for exercise and shopping. They could do so by whatever means suited them, be it walking, cycling, car bus or train.
There has been separate advice for older people and vulnerable groups, but no rules or legislation.

yes, they are. Many supermarkets like Waitrose allow only over-70s and NHS staff in for the first hour of the day; others have one or two days a week where they do this. (You can check out their websites to see how they're arranging it.)
Your neighbours are doing the sensible thing by shopping for a week so they don't have to go too often, but if there are special shopping hours available nearby they should probably give them a go: it lessens the chance of bumping into younger people who are infected but don't know it and don't wear masks or anything.

I'm 73 and shop every week - sometimes more than once. I'm also a delivery driver for a local voluntary group delivering food parcels and collecting prescriptions for those shielding, unable to get out or simply not having money to buy food. Drive up, phone person to let them know I'm there and leave parcel on the doorstep. I usually wait in the van until I'm sure they have got it. Would go round the twist if I had to be in the house 7 days a week.
